The latest move by PVR-INOX—Flexi-Show—promises a new level of flexibility for moviegoers. The concept is simple: “Pay only as much as you watch.” If you choose to leave mid-movie, you get a partial refund based on the duration left.
Here’s how the refund system works:
• More than 75% of the movie left → 60% refund
• 50–75% of the movie left → 50% refund
• 25–50% of the movie left → 30% refund
While this may seem like a customer-friendly initiative, it also raises a fundamental question: Do people really walk into a theater expecting to leave halfway? The theater experience is already a commitment—tickets, travel, and of course, the expensive popcorn.
A Sign of Changing Times?
PVR’s Flexi-Show is clearly a response to the increasing dominance of OTT platforms. With consumers having the convenience of pausing, skipping, or switching content from their couches, cinemas are under pressure to offer similar flexibility. But does this feature actually add value, or is it a band-aid solution to a larger issue—declining footfalls?

Theater chains are experimenting with strategies to win back audiences, including trailer screenings for a nominal fee, subscription passes, and discounted weekday shows. While these efforts indicate adaptability, they also hint at a struggle to remain relevant.
Will It Work?
Flexi-Show might appeal to a niche segment—those unsure about their movie choice. However, for most viewers, watching a film in a theater is about the complete experience. Leaving midway, even with a refund, might not be enticing enough.
The real challenge for cinemas is to enhance the overall experience—better content curation, improved services, and exclusive in-theater perks—rather than relying on flexible pricing models alone.
